AUTO or ON? That Little Switch Matters in Florida
It's one of the smallest choices on the thermostat.
FAN: AUTO | ON
ON sounds better.
The air keeps moving.
Temperatures might feel more even.
And when the weather is beautiful outside, opening the windows and leaving the fan running can feel fantastic.
Fresh Florida air moving through the house.
What could possibly be wrong with that?
Maybe nothing.
But in Southwest Florida, there's another part of the story:
Humidity.
The A/C isn't only cooling the house.
When the compressor is running, the evaporator coil gets cold.
Warm, humid household air passes across it.
Moisture condenses on the coil and drains away.
That's part of how an air conditioner removes humidity from the house.
When the thermostat reaches temperature, the compressor shuts off.
With the fan set to AUTO, the blower normally shuts down as well after its configured delay.
Now the moisture remaining on the evaporator coil has an opportunity to continue draining.
But what happens if the blower keeps running?
Depending on the equipment and installation, some of the moisture remaining on that wet coil can evaporate back into the moving air.
And where does that air go?
Right back into the house.
So something that sounds logical:
"Keep the fan running to circulate the air."
can sometimes work against humidity control in a Florida home.
Now open the windows.
It's January.
72 degrees outside.
Beautiful breeze.
This is why we live here.
The windows go up.
Maybe the sliders are open.
And somebody leaves the HVAC fan running because circulating that fresh air through the house feels great.
There's just one thing worth remembering.
Comfortable outdoor air isn't necessarily dry outdoor air.
Southwest Florida can have plenty of moisture in the air even when the temperature feels fantastic.
With windows and doors open, that moisture is entering the house.
Running the HVAC blower can help distribute that humid air throughout the home and duct system.
Do it occasionally on a beautiful day?
That's living in Florida.
But doing it routinely while believing the HVAC fan is helping dehumidify the house?
That's where the misunderstanding begins.
And the fan isn't running for free.
ON means the blower operates continuously.
Depending on the equipment, that can mean many additional hours of electrical consumption compared with AUTO.
Modern variable-speed systems can operate very differently from older single-speed equipment, so there isn't one universal energy number that applies to every home.
But there is still a basic difference:
AUTO runs the blower when the system calls for it. ON tells it to keep running.
Does that mean everyone should always use AUTO?
No.
That's where HVAC advice gets dangerous when it becomes too absolute.
Some systems are specifically designed for continuous or variable-speed circulation.
Some homes have dedicated dehumidification.
Some equipment has sophisticated humidity controls.
Some homeowners have specific indoor-air-quality requirements.
Different equipment can require different operating strategies.
But for a conventional Florida residential system, AUTO is generally a sensible starting point unless the equipment, installer or HVAC professional recommends otherwise.
The important part is understanding that the little FAN switch doesn't simply mean:
air movement or no air movement.
It can affect:
- humidity
- evaporation from the coil
- energy consumption
- air circulation
- filtration runtime
- how the house feels
And there's another connection back to the first story.
If the fan runs continuously...
the filter is filtering continuously too.
That means a filter in a house running the blower 24 hours a day can be dealing with considerably more airflow than one in a house where the fan operates only during heating and cooling calls.
Which brings us right back to the original question:
"Why did this filter get dirty so quickly?"
Sometimes the answer isn't the filter.
Sometimes it's simply how the house is being operated.
