Where Does All That A/C Water Go?

Turn on the A/C and cold air comes out.

That's the part everybody notices.

But something else is happening inside that air handler.

It's making water.

A Florida A/C doesn't only cool the house.

As warm, humid air passes across the cold evaporator coil, moisture condenses on that coil.

It drips into a pan.

Then that water has to get out of the house.

And suddenly a little white PVC pipe becomes pretty important.

Where does the water go?

That depends on the house and the equipment.

Some systems drain by gravity.

Some use condensate pumps.

Some installations require a properly designed trap because of pressure created by the blower.

Different equipment.

Different installations.

Different solutions.

But the goal is the same:

Get the water out.

On certain air-handler configurations, the blower creates negative pressure around the condensate pan.

Think of it as suction.

If the condensate drain and trap aren't configured correctly for that particular equipment, that pressure can interfere with the water trying to leave.

That's why the trap isn't necessarily just a funny bend somebody made with extra PVC fittings.

On systems that require one, it has a job.

It's also why sometimes water may noticeably release through a drain when the blower stops.

The A/C didn't suddenly create all that water. The pressure conditions simply changed.

Then comes the gunk.

A condensate drain is regularly exposed to moisture.

Over time, biological slime and other buildup can develop inside the drain system.

A little becomes more.

It catches debris.

The opening gets smaller.

The water moves slower.

Eventually...

nothing.

The problem is that the A/C can continue removing moisture from the air even though the drain isn't doing its job properly.

Now the location of the air handler suddenly matters.

Air handler in the garage?

Maybe you get lucky.

There may be water underneath the unit or a puddle on the garage floor.

Annoying.

But relatively easy to notice.

Air handler in an interior closet?

Now water may reach drywall, baseboards or flooring.

Air handler above the ceiling?

That's the version nobody wants.

A relatively simple clogged condensate line can become a ceiling, drywall and paint repair.

And then there's the float switch.

The A/C suddenly stops.

The thermostat is calling for cooling.

The breaker looks fine.

But nothing happens.

It is easy to immediately think:

"Great. The A/C broke."

Maybe.

But there's another possibility.

The condensate drain may have backed up and the float switch shut the system down.

If that's what happened, the annoying little switch may have just done exactly what it was designed to do.

It stopped the equipment before water ended up somewhere much more expensive.

When it's 90 degrees outside, that switch can feel like the bad guy.

Until you realize what it may have prevented.

One Simple Thing a Handy Homeowner Can Try

If the condensate drain appears clogged and someone is comfortable doing basic home maintenance, there is one relatively simple first attempt. Turn the A/C system off. Locate the condensate drain outlet outside. Connect a wet/dry shop vacuum to the end, create a reasonably good seal and let the vacuum pull on the line for several minutes.

Sometimes what comes out explains the entire problem. Water. Slime. Gunk. Debris.

If that doesn't solve it, or if you're not comfortable working around HVAC equipment, stop there and call an A/C technician. There is plenty of system-specific maintenance information available for homeowners who are comfortable doing more, but every installation is different.

And don't reach for the bleach. Bleach is corrosive. Introducing a corrosive chemical around HVAC equipment, metals and coils because somebody online said they do it isn't a maintenance method we recommend. If a drain requires additional cleaning or treatment, follow the equipment manufacturer's guidance or ask an HVAC professional what is appropriate for that particular system.

One Last Thing Worth Looking At

Can the drain actually be serviced?

Some portions of a PVC condensate system are correctly solvent-cemented and should be.

But traps, cleanouts and service points that were designed to remain accessible shouldn't be permanently assembled in a way that makes normal maintenance unnecessarily difficult.

Eventually somebody may need to get into that line.

A Florida A/C can remove a surprising amount of moisture from a house.

Most days nobody thinks about where that water goes.

And that's exactly how it should be.

Until one day it doesn't go anywhere.

Then that little white PVC pipe suddenly becomes one of the most important pipes in the house.
